The right way to burn a scented pillar candle

 
When using your scented pillar candle, remember that size is important.

Pillar candles will burn for about an hour for every inch in diameter of the candle.  So if you buy a 2 or 3 inch diameter candle be prepared to leave it alight for several hours the first time you use your scented pillar candle.

If you choose pillar candles with multiple wicks, burn them for long enough to allow the pool of wax from each wick to connect with its neighbour to form one large pool....

Allow 2 inches between candles to make sure they don't cause their neighbours to melt.

Because candles have a “memory”, the first time you light a pillar candle allow it to burn long enough to create a pool of wax that covers the diameter of the candle - in other words, the complete top surface of the candle.

If you don’t, the next time you use it the candle will burn only as wide as the first pool created, and it won’t burn as evenly as it should.

Eventually you’ll end up with a candle with a tunnel through it that will become increasingly difficult to light (although the translucent effect can be attractive, if a little wasteful inside a scented pillar candle).
